Just a place to pile and share stuff. And the occasional art.

Remember the photosets about abandoned mental asylums, abandoned theme parks and the ghost city of Prypiat? Today I bring you photos about the abandoned island city of Hashima, Japan.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaa

Whenever I see pictures of abandoned areas like this, my first thought isn’t “OH SCARY.”

It’s more, “Hm. What would cause people to abandon a place like this? Why did this happen?” and it makes me think.

Just thought I’d share.

see my first thought is “lets go get some masks so we dont breathe potential asbestos in, put on some protective clothing, and go explore”

I wanna go explore there

jason i know you know about this place but here are some pictures

I don’t really consider it to be scary… just unsettling. When you consider that all those buildings, houses and streets once were filled with people going about their daily lives, thinking about small problems or huge problems, laughing, crying, eating, drinking… ignorance and tolerance, homeless and rich people, orphans and huge families, people going through divorces or breakups, teenagers crushing on each other or celebreties, kids watching their favourite TVshows or nagging their parents about a toy they really want to have.

And then it’s just all gone. All the products, the buildings, the streets, the trainstations, the computers, TVs, lightbulbs, books, traffic lights… everything becomes meaningless and has no purpose anymore. All the effort people put into building their lives there, no matter with what background, all the money and work that went into their homes, and how the carpet has to match the dining table and how long it took to finally get that huge sofa into the flat, and how proud they were to finally be able to afford that TV… it becomes just irrelevant, it doesn’t matter anymore. It has no meaning to anybody.

I don’t know… I just find it sad and unsettling. Everything there once had a purpose, a meaning, it mattered to someone and evoked emotions and was part of their lives… and now it is nothing more than rotting ruins.

Not to mention that it is really unsettling to walk through a city without any sounds, any cars moving by, no people walking around, nobody chatting, shouting, nothing. We are so used to the noise around us that we don’t even perceive conciously. How weird and unnerving would it be to walk through a city, which we usually associate with noise, stress, masses of people, that is completely empty and abandoned.
I can see how people might find that scary. It is kinda scary in its own way. We need familiarity, we need the routine. And when something familiar is off, changed or we perceive it in a way we never did before, it is only natural to feel unease and even fear.
